WARFIELD — Martin County Middle School volleyball team began the 2022-2023 campaign Feb. 7 and has played three regular season games.
The Lady Cardinal team comprises 22 seventh and eighth graders and is grouped into C-, B- and A-teams.
Below is a recap of their action this season:
MCMS vs. JCMS
All three teams lost in their first outing at Johns Creek.
C-team
All seventh graders with some elementary experience, the C-team is undefeated at home. This squad also beat Herald Whitaker on the road.
B-team
A mix of seventh and eighth graders, the B-team Lady Cards fought hard in three sets but came up short against Herald Whitaker at home.
The tables turned when the B-team went on the road to Herald Whitaker and returned with a win in just two sets.
A-team
MCMS A-team brings more experience as all players are eighth graders.
Losing the first game put a fire under this group, a determination any coach hopes to see.
Coach Elizabeth Mann’s Lady Cardinals rallied to blow away Herald Whitaker on the MCMS home court.
Sickness hit the A-team, but they showed up at Herald Whitaker willing to give it all they had.
The Lady Cards lost the first set, rallied and fought hard to win the second, and came up short two points in the third.
“These girls bring so much determination, fight and sass to every practice and game,” Coach Mann said. “Everyone should come out and support these amazing young ladies.”
The Lady Cards will face Betsy Lane on the Bobcat court Thursday.
They will play at home March 7 against Herald Whitaker, March 9 against the Paintsville Tigers, and March 10 against Johns Creek.
MCMS will host Betsy Layne on “Eighth Grade Night” March 16.
On March 21, the Lady Cards go back on the road to Herald Whitaker, then March 23 to Paintsville.
