INEZ — Martin County junior Laken Williams  (#3) and junior (#10) Blake Maynard are the Mountain Citizen Players of the Week.

Williams was named to the Pre-Season Lexington Herald-Leader as one of the top 25 players in the state of Kentucky for the 2022-2023 season. She has not disappointed as she is currently ranked 12th in the state in scoring.

Williams holds down the point guard position for the Lady Cardinals and has helped lead them to a Smokey Mountain Classic championship, Sunshine Classic runner-up and 15th Region All “A” Classic runner-up. 

Williams is the first repeat Mountain Citizen Player of the Week.

Williams had 23 points, seven rebounds, and dished out five assists in the Lady Cards win over Paintsville 67-42 on Jan. 17. She shot 48% from the field.

Williams had 18 points, five steals, seven rebounds, and four assists in just three quarters of play over 57th District opponent Magoffin County for a 56-26 victory. 

She also scored 23 points against West Carter. 

Williams is the daughter of Amanda Jarvis and Kevin Williams. 

Maynard plays center for the Martin County Cardinals and comes off the bench to give the Cardinals valuable minutes.

In the Martin County vs. East Ridge game, Maynard helped lead the Cardinals to an 84-64 win. He scored eight points, going 3-of-6 from the field for 50%. He grabbed five rebounds, had two blocks and was 2-of-3 from the free-throw line for 67%.

In the Martin County vs. Betsy Layne game Blake had two boards and two blocks to help lead the Cardinals to a 74-69 victory over Betsy Layne.

He scored eight points, grabbed 10 rebounds and had two blocks to lead the Cardinals past Belfry 86-63.

Maynard averages four points and four rebounds a game.

He is the son of Alisha and Opie Maynard.
