Lady Cards go 2-1 in Daytona tourney

Martin County Lady Cards show off their runner-up hardware at the Daytona Beach Sunshine Classic.

DAYTONA BEACH — The Martin County Lady Cardinals traveled to the Sunshine State last week for the Daytona Beach Sunshine Classic Dec. 27-30. The Lady Cards played three games making it into the championship game. Below is a recap of the action. 

Lady Cards sink Sharks 70-16

Martin County took on Atlantic High School of Port Orange, Florida, to open the first round of the Daytona Beach Sunshine Classic on Dec. 27.

The Lady Cards wasted no time jumping on the Lady Sharks and defeating them 70-16.

This one was over fast as the Lady Cards jumped to a 17-2 lead at the end of the first quarter.

The second quarter was much the same as the Lady Cards continued to press the Sharks causing numerous turnovers and leading to a 22-2 second quarter for the Cards.

The Cardinals had a commanding 39-4 lead at the half.

Coach Robin Newsome subbed at will throughout the game, allowing every player time on the floor.

The Lady Cards won the third quarter 18-5 and took a 57-9 lead into the fourth quarter.

The final frame started with a running clock. Martin County finished the quarter 13-6 over the Sharks to finish the win.

“This was not much of a contest, but it allowed me to let all the kids play and that’s always a good thing,” Coach Newsome said.

Freshman guard Brooke Marcum scored a career-high 18 points. She had six assists and five steals.

Laken Williams recorded her first double-double of the season scoring 15 points and dishing out 10 assists.

Katie Marcum and Alyssa Allen netted 13 points each. Allen also contributed six steals.

Rounding out the scoring, sophomore Candace Spaulding flipped in six points, freshman Chloe May netted three and freshman Bella Muncy added two.

The win moved the Lady Cards to the semifinal round of their bracket to take on Hopkins County on Thursday.

Lady Cards defeat Hopkins 60-56

Martin County Lady Cards took on a good Hopkins County team Thursday in the Daytona Sunshine Classic for a 60-56 win.
