Panthers win pair in holiday tourney

NAUGATUCK — Tug Valley rolled over Gilmer County 87-42 Thursday in the Kaydence Maynard Memorial Christmas Tournament at the TVHS gym.

The Panthers jumped out to a 22-10 first quarter lead and led 49-15 at the half.

The game was never close as Tug Valley played several players in the victory. Fifteen players scored for Coach Garland “Rabbit” Thompson’s squad.

Parker Davis and Paul Preece led the way for TVHS with 15 points each. Buddy Marcum and Kaden Hale each scored eight points, Evan Bryant and Johnathan Wagoner added seven each, Julian Vance and Ashton Davis each netted five, Joey Gollihue contributed four and Braydun Ferris pitched in three. Brady Brewer, Bryson Elia, Aiden Armstrong, Carson Newsome and Jace Hale added two apiece. Marcum pulled down seven rebounds to lead the Panthers in that statistic.

Tyler Bush led the visitors with 20 points.

Tug Valley shot 47 % from the floor including 42% from behind the arc. They were only 10-21 at the free-throw line for 48 %.

NAUGATUCK — The Tug Valley Panthers finished their own holiday tournament with a solid 69-44 win over Cameron on Friday night in the finale of the two-day event.

Both Cameron and Tug Valley went into the tourney as top 10 rated teams in Class A in West Virginia. Cameron was No. 4, while the Panthers were No. 7 in the latest poll. That will change when the newest poll is released.

The Panthers jumped out to a 19-6 lead after one quarter. Cameron fought back to cut into the lead outscoring Tug Valley 13-9 in the second quarter. 

A huge third quarter for Coach Rabbit Thompson’s squad helped them pull away as they outscored the visitors 28-11 in the period.

The teams played virtually even in the final stanza as Tug improved to 4-2 on the young season.

Thompson said he was pleased with his team’s performances during the tourney but said there is still room for improvement.

Parker Davis led the Panthers in scoring with 19 points including a pair of 3-pointers, while Ashton Davis fired in 17 points making four treys. Braydun Ferris and Buddy Marcum each chipped in 10 points for TVHS. Johnahan Wagoner scored four, Aiden Armstrong three, and Bryson Elia, Joey Gollihue and Carson Newsome finished with two points apiece. Ferris led the Panthers with four assists. 

Lance Hartley led Cameron with 15 points, while Colson Wichterman added 13.

Tug Valley shot 46% from the floor including 9-21 from behind the arc for 43 %. They were better at the free-throw line in this contest making 12-15 for 80%.

The Panthers will host Logan for a rematch Saturday. Next week they have three games scheduled as they entertain Sherman and Van and then travel to Man to finish out a busy slate.
