INEZ — Martin County Sheriff John Kirk is warning residents about a phone scam.

Kirk says the caller claims to be the electric company and asks for payment over the phone, telling residents their service will be disconnected if they do not pay.

The sheriff says residents should not give payment information to these callers.

“The electric company will not call you asking for payment,” adds Kirk.
