Clayton Edward Meade

1942—2022

Clayton Edward Meade, 80, of Stepptown, W.Va., passed away Dec. 16, 2022 at St. Mary’s Hospital in Huntington, W.Va.

He was born Jan. 13, 1942 in Mingo County, W.Va., to Lawrence and Carmen (Cline) Meade, who preceded him in death. He is also preceded in death by his beloved wife, Linda Meade, and siblings Lawrence Meade Jr., Christine Meade, Herbert Meade, Ray Meade and Ruth Burton.

Clayton joined the Army when he was 17. He gave 23 years of his life serving his country. He did two separate tours in Vietnam. He received many medals and was an E-7 Army Sergeant First Class when he retired with an Honorable Discharge. He was stationed in several different countries and many U.S. states. He wore his uniform with pride. After retirement, he worked for several years in a military store.

Clayton was a longtime member of the Neely Branch United Baptist Church.

He leaves to cherish his memory his loving children, Deborah Hale of Washington, Lisa John (Edward Lanham) of Louisiana and Donna Meade of Winnie, Texas. He also leaves four stepchildren who loved him dearly, Thelma and David Moore of Inez, Johnny Ray and Shelia Kay Jude of Fort Gay, W.Va., D.J. Jude of London and Stacie and Kevin Dials. Clayton is also survived by his siblings, Louise King of Eden, N.C., Janie (Doug) Jeffery of West Van Lear, Nadine (Mark) Bowen of Lavalette, W.Va., Nancy (Estill) Jarvis of Tutor Key, Roger Meade of Kermit, W.Va., and Bernice Meade of Keysville, Va.; several grandchildren, step-grandchildren, and great-grandchildren who he loved; nieces and nephews; and his fur baby, Bella.

Funeral services were conducted Dec. 20, 2022 at Mullins Family Funeral Home, Warfield, with Russell Ball officiating. A military service was observed to honor his years of service. Burial was at the Maynard Cemetery on Pigeon Roost Road, where he was laid beside his beloved wife, Linda. He will be missed. Psalms 17:15: “As for me, I will behold your face in righteousness. I shall be satisfied when I awake with thy likeness.”
