INEZ — Martin County juniors Katie Marcum and Jacob Sturgell are the Mountain Citizen Players of the Week.
Marcum (32) is a third-year starter for the Lady Cardinals holding down the C/F spot.
She chalked up her third double-double of the season to help the Lady Cards to a 60-56 victory over Floyd County Central in the Smoky Mountain Classic championship game Thursday. Marcum had 19 points and 14 boards, shot 8-for-16 from the field for 50% and 3-for-4 from the free-throw line for 75%.
In the semifinal vs. Chapman (S.C.) Dec. 21, Marcum had 13 points and eight boards in the Lady Cardinal 66-44 win.
In the first-round game vs. Battery (S.C.) Dec. 20, Marcum had 11 rebounds and eight points for the 62-40 Martin County win.
Marcum currently leads her team in rebounds averaging 9.2 per game.
She is the daughter of Bobby and Hazel Marcum.
Sturgell (20) holds down the C/F position for the Martin County Cardinals. In the Martin County vs. Montgomery County game Dec.17, Sturgell went 7-for-9 from the field, shooting 78%. He finished the game with 14 points and six rebounds to help lead the Cardinals to a 68-58 victory for their sixth win of the season.
In the Martin County vs. Rowan County game Dec. 20, Marcum scored 12 points, going 5-for-10 from the field for 50% shooting, to help the Cardinals to a 73-52 win. Marcum also pulled down eight rebounds and currently leads the Cardinals in rebounds averaging 5.5 rebounds per game.
