INEZ — This week’s Mountain Citizen Players of the Week are Laken Williams and Luke Hale.
Martin County High School junior point guard (3) Laken Williams led the Lady Cardinals past Raceland 70-45, finishing with 25 points, five steals and four rebounds. She shot 61% from the field, going 10 of 18, and helped get the Lady Cards off to a 5-0 record to start the season.
Williams led the Lady Cardinals with 21 points, five rebounds and four assists in the first 57th District matchup at Paintsville High School on Saturday. The Lady Cards fell short 55-51 for their first loss of the season to go 5-1.
Williams is the daughter of Amanda Jarvis and Kevin Williams. She is being recruited by several colleges and currently holds offers from West Virginia Tech and Shawnee State.
Hale (3) is a junior guard for the Martin County Cardinals. His performance this week was huge in leading the Cardinals past Perry County Central Commodores 106-83.
Hale scored a career-high 38 points, hitting 7-for-14 from the three-point line for 50%. He also had six rebounds and three steals.
Hale stepped to the free-throw line to knock down eight straight when Perry Central’s coach was hit with four technical fouls. He finished 9-for-9 from the free-throw line shooting 100% for the game.
In the Stock Yard Challenge on Saturday at Rowan County High School, Hale scored 15 points to lead the Cardinals to a 68-58 win over Montgomery County. He has played a key role in leading the Cardinals to a 6-2 record.
Hale is the son of Cara Goble Hale and Shawn Hale.
