Lady Cards start season 4-0

Big wins over Shelby Valley, Belfry

INEZ — Martin County Lady Cards are off to a hot start on the season. They improved to 4-0 last week with victories over Shelby Valley 73-28 Friday and Belfry 53-39 Saturday.

Both games were played in Inez. Below is a recap of the action.

SV vs. MC

The Lady Cards came out firing Friday night to defeat the Shelby Valley Wildcats 73-28. The Lady Cards would finish the game shooting 31 for 62 for 50% from the field.

This one was over early as the Lady Cards came out pressing, causing the Wildcats to commit several early turnovers. The Lady Cards jumped out to a 23-8 lead at the end of the first quarter.

The second quarter was much the same as the Lady Cards turned up the defensive heat. Junior Katie Marcum went off for 11 of her 25 points for the game. The Lady Cards outscored Valley 21-9 in the frame to lead at the half 44-17.

Martin County held Shelby Valley to four single-digit quarters for the game. The Wildcats scored four points in the third quarter and seven in the fourth. At the end of three, the game was out of reach as the Lady Cards had pushed the lead out 64-21.

Martin County Coach Robin Newsome called off the press in the second half and went to her bench early allowing her players valuable varsity minutes. Eleven players saw action with all 11 breaking into the scoring column.
