“Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.” II Timothy 2:15
Remember long division from your childhood studies? It was most every elementary school kid’s least favorite mathematical endeavor. Why? Well, it usually wasn’t because the concept behind division was so difficult to understand but because the process to find the answer was time-consuming and tedious. As students we had to really invest some time in finding the answers to those long-division problems, time we’d rather have spent playing outside!
Here in II Timothy 2, we are told of another type of division: the division, or accurate interpretation, of the Word of God. Much like the division of our childhood, this division requires us to invest time and energy to come up with the correct answers!
Last week we wrote of the awesome privilege and responsibility we have as modern believers to be exposed to the written Word of God, the Bible. Because we have such ready access to the Bible, we have been given the opportunity to understand the mysteries of God more so than any generation that has gone before us. It’s this Word that brings understanding of all things God, that opens our eyes to the absolute truths of this life, and that is our guide to greater success in this life.
