Lady Cards dominate Betsy Layne in season opener

INEZ — The Lady Cards came out fast and furious using full-court pressure defense to jump on Betsy Layne 20-3 at the end of the first quarter in Monday’s season opener at home. This game was over early as the Lady Cards coasted to a 63-30 win.

Martin County led at the half  36-7 with Coach Robin Newsome playing all 15 players in the first half.

The coach was proud of her team’s defense pressure.

“The kids played hard and shared the ball really well,” Newsome said. “This was a total team effort.”

Junior standout Laken Williams led all scorers with 23 points and seven steals. Junior beast Katie Marcum recorded a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Freshman guard Brooke Marcum followed with 10 points and seven big boards. Junior Alyssa Allen added seven points, four steals and seven rebounds. Freshman Chloe May chipped in seven points and one block. Candace Spaulding and Angelina Moore each added two points. 

Haleigh Damron led the Bobcats with 11 points. Kinleigh Martin chipped in seven, Jaden Pente followed with four, Laci Hall and Karli Williams added three and Lakyn Ward two. 

The Lady Cards will be back in action Saturday in the Marshall County Hoopfest.
