INEZ — Tug Valley ran past Lawrence County 83-62 in the annual Zip Zone Express Tip Off Classic held Saturday at Martin County High School’s gym.
The Thanksgiving weekend event helps start the high school basketball season in the area.
Although the game was considered a preseason scrimmage, Panthers head coach Garland “Rabbit” Thompson was pleased with the win.
Sophomore Joey Gollihue led five Tug Valley players in double figures scoring 19. Senior Parker Davis was right behind him with 18, Braydun Ferris flipped in 14, Buddy Marcum banked in 11 and Ashton Davis added 10.
Gollihue swished in four 3-pointers in his total, while Davis nailed a couple for TVHS.
Andrew Butterfield led Lawrence County with 22 points.
Tug Valley led 39-31 at halftime and outscored the Bulldogs 44-31 in the second half.
Thompson said it was a good tuneup game for his young squad with only two seniors on the roster.
Tug Valley will be playing several sophomores and some freshmen this season. Thompson said his team still has some work to do before the regular season begins.
West Virginia high school basketball teams are not allowed to start their official games until the second week of December.
