INEZ — The Martin County Lady Cardinals hit the hardwood Saturday for the first scrimmage of the season and came up short 58-48 against reigning 54th District champion Leslie County out of the 14th Region.
Four Martin County players scored in double figures.
Junior standout guard Laken Williams led the way with 15 points and six assists, junior forward Katie Marcum added 10 points, junior Alyssa Allen tossed in 10 points, and freshman guard Brooke Marcum knocked down three treys for nine points. Freshmen Chloe May and Sophie Harless each pitched in two points.
Coach Robin Newsome was pleased with how her team shared the ball as they had 15 assists in the game.
“I saw a lot of good things but also a lot we need to work on,” Newsome said.
Martin County is coming off a 23-7 record last season, a 57th District title and a great showing in the 15th Region tournament. The team is looking to replace two starters in Brittany Thompson and Jaaliyah Warren.
“This year’s team has no seniors but a talented group of juniors along with one sophomore and several young talented freshmen,” said Newsome.
Fans also got a look at the freshman and junior varsity teams, but stats were not kept for those scrimmages.
The Lady Cardinals will be back in action Saturday in the Zip Zone Classic as they take on Chapmanville at 5:20 p.m. at Martin County High School.
