INEZ — Martin County High School’s Brock Messer and Savannah Young are the Mountain Citizen Players of the Week.

Messer rushed for 203 yards on eight carries and hit paydirt three times Friday to help the Cardinals shut out West Carter 48-0.

Messer received the handoff for a 40-yard carry and his first TD, the opening score of the game. He sprinted downfield 79 yards for the next Cardinal touchdown. On third-and-11, Messer ran straight through the hole his line created for 49 yards and Martin County’s third TD.

Messer ranks fifth in the 2A in rushing with 974 yards. He ranks sixth in scoring with 92 points.

Young finished the soccer season on a high note Oct. 11 in the 15th Region Tournament, scoring the first goal in a girls regional soccer tournament in Martin County High School history.

The senior scored from the left when she punched a kick past the Prestonsburg goalie.
