WARFIELD — Several seventh- and eighth-grade students from Martin County Middle School (MCMS) recently earned top honors in the 2025 Conservation Essay Contest, demonstrating their knowledge and appreciation for Kentucky’s natural resources.

This year’s theme, “Kentucky Wetlands Up Close,” encouraged students to explore the importance of wetlands and their role in protecting wildlife, improving water quality, and supporting ecosystems across the state.

MCMS students had an outstanding showing in the local competition, capturing first-, second-, and third-place honors.

Olivia Maynard took first place for her essay titled “Kentucky’s Hidden Heroes: The Vital Role of Wetlands.”

Kennedy Mills received second place for her essay titled “Kentucky Wetlands Conservation.”

Serenity Hart earned third place for her essay titled “Importance of Kentucky Wetlands.”

These students and Martin County Middle School will be recognized April 1 at the local Extension Office for their achievements in the contest.

In addition to winning the local competition, Olivia Maynard’s essay advanced to the state level, where she earned first place in Kentucky’s Area 8. She will be recognized for this accomplishment Monday, March 16 at the Kentucky Castle Ballroom in Versailles, alongside other top student writers from across the region.

MCMS staff say the success of these students highlights their dedication and academic excellence while also promoting awareness of the importance of conservation and the protection of Kentucky’s natural environments.
