Lady Cardinals top Magoffin County, lock up No. 3 seed

SALYERSVILLE — Martin County Lady Cards closed the regular season on a high note Feb. 19. They defeated Magoffin County 59-43 to secure the No. 3 seed in the 57th District Tournament.

This was the Lady Cards’ fourth straight win as they earned a first-round district matchup against Paintsville, Monday, Feb. 23 at 8:15 p.m.

Martin County leaned on its perimeter shooting and balanced production. The Lady Cards knocked down 10 3-pointers and shot 48.8% from the field (20 of 41) in the district-clinching victory.

Senior Chloe May led the Lady Cards with 21 points, hitting 6 of 8 from 3-point range. She added eight rebounds, five assists and three steals in an all-around performance.

Makenna Marcum finished with 17 points, including a pair of 3-pointers, and went 3 for 3 at the free-throw line. She grabbed three rebounds, dished out two assists, and swiped a steal.

Maci Maynard recorded a double-double with 11 points and a game-high 13 rebounds while shooting 5 of 7 from the floor. She handed out two assists.

Annaleigh Davis chipped in two points and helped direct the offense with five assists. She also had two rebounds and a steal. Sophie Harless added three points, an assist and four rebounds. Desirae Gullett scored three points and grabbed a board.

As a team, Martin County shot 45.5% from beyond the arc (10 of 22) and added 31 rebounds. The Lady Cards also went 9 of 15 from the free-throw line.
