Maynard posts double-double

PAINTSVILLE — Maci Maynard posted a double-double but Johnson Central’s full-court pressure and fast start carried the Golden Eagles to a 50-35 win over Martin County, Jan. 30.

Johnson Central jumped out to a 9-0 lead and kept Martin County scoreless until five minutes into the first quarter.

The Golden Eagles responded with another surge, closing the opening period on a 5-0 run to build a 21-4 advantage.

Martin County settled in during the second quarter behind Maynard, who fueled a 7-0 spurt. Chloe May inbounded to Maynard, then stepped into the corner and Maynard found her for a 3 to make it 21-7. Maynard followed with a rebound-and-putback and two free throws as the Lady Cardinals trimmed the deficit to 21-11.

Johnson Central’s Karlea Stanley stopped the momentum with a rare four-point play, and the Golden Eagles carried a 27-16 lead into halftime after Maynard continued to chip away at the line.

Johnson Central opened the third quarter with a 5-0 run, but Maynard broke it with an inside bucket.

Martin County then found some rhythm from deep. Marcum drilled a trey from the top of the key and Davis banked in a deep 3-pointer off a Marcum feed. Still, Johnson Central answered each push and took a 45-28 lead into the fourth.

Neither team scored in the final period until under 4:30 remaining when Maynard scored in the paint to make it 45-30. Davis later found Maynard again for another basket. Then Marcum drove and kicked to May in the corner for a long-range shot, Martin County’s final points, before Johnson Central closed out the 50-35 victory.

Maynard posted a double-double with 19 points, 12 rebounds, one assist and one block. May added six points, 10 rebounds and three assists for Martin County. Davis finished with five points and two assists, while Marcum had three points, three assists and a rebound. Sophie Harless totaled two points, five rebounds and a steal.

The Lady Cards will play at Morgan County, Feb. 4 and Magoffin County, Feb. 6. Coach Robin Newsome’s squad will return home Saturday, Feb. 5 against Wolfe County before a 57th District rematch Feb. 10 with Johnson Central.
