“In Martin County, our community values a quality education as an important step along the pathway to success for our students,” James wrote in the statement. “Our school board members are instrumental in this endeavor. They give freely of their personal time to support the efforts of the school district.”

Current board members are Mickey McCoy, chairman; Steven Gauze, vice chairman; Kathleen Price; James “Bowie” Clark; and Lorna Cassady.

James said the members “contribute greatly to our community through their service on the Martin County Board of Education.”

“These decision-makers are responsible for maintaining strong, effective budgetary oversight, high standards for employment and a safe, well-managed set of school facilities,” James wrote. “They provide leadership and governance to our local school district. All members of our board support our schools and serve our community with integrity and a commitment to our children’s futures. They exhibit a rational approach to the decision-making process and the ability to provide comprise solutions to a number of difficult board decisions. Their outstanding service is demonstrated by their commitment to governance and establishment of quality educational opportunities within our district.”

“I would like to thank each member for their invaluable leadership on the Martin County Board of Education. I would also like to encourage all citizens of Martin County to honor and thank each of these individuals for their service and support to our students, teachers, staff and community.”

McCoy, who represents District 1, has served on the board for about 11 years and said he “might sign up” again.

Gauze, of District 4, was recently reelected and has served for eight years.

Price, of District 5, has served for about 23 years and was appointed to the regional school board in 2024.

“We appreciate Kathleen very much for her service,” James said Monday. “It’s a thankless job. Usually, there is no one patting you on the back.”

Price said, “There is a lot of joy in it when you see your schools making progress. It’s worth it all.”

Clark, of District 2, has served for six years.

“You’re going to do it at least one more time, too, right?” James asked Clark, who replied, “Yes.”

Cassady, of District 3, is in her sixth year on the board.
