Martin County wrestling finishes fourth in Bobby Bates

WISE, Va. — Martin County High School wrestling turned in a strong showing on the road Friday and Saturday. The team placed fourth overall in the Bobby Bates Classic at the University of Virginia-Wise.

Placers across multiple weight classes led the Cardinals of Coach Josh Muncy.

A program milestone from HaiLeigh Smith highlighted the weekend. She finished fourth at 126 pounds to become the first female wrestler in Martin County High School history to earn a placement in a varsity tournament.

Martin County’s top finish came from JJ Mollett, who placed second at 113.

Brody Jewell (106), Parker Maynard (157) and Cole Jewell (165) brought home third-place medals.

Several other Cardinals cracked the podium.

Blake Lemaster (120), Easton Slone (190) and Jeremy Begley (150) all placed fourth.

Noah Bowens rounded out the team’s placers with a fifth-place finish at 144.
