INEZ — Martin County High School’s HaiLeigh Smith and Braxton Keathley are the Kirk & Crum Law Firm Players of the Week.

Smith made Martin County High School history at the Bobby Bates Classic at the University of Virginia-Wise on Saturday. She became the program’s first female wrestler to earn a placement at a varsity tournament.

Smith finished fourth in the 126-pound division, helping the Cardinals secure a fourth-place team finish. Her breakthrough weekend was a milestone for the continued growth of opportunities for girls in the sport across the region.

Keathley delivered a performance for the record books Saturday at the Republic Bank-Sayre School Lankster Classic in Lexington. The guard set a new Martin County school record with 12 made 3-pointers in a 92-64 victory over Kentucky Country Day.

Keathley poured in 42 points on 14-19 shooting. He also collected four rebounds, three assists and five steals.
