Tug Valley well represented on All-State football team

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — The Tug Valley High School football team landed four players on the Class A All-State Team.

The West Virginia Sports Writers Association votes on the All-State teams. They released the results Dec. 8.

Tug senior defensive back Bryson Elia was named to the First Team Defense, while junior linebacker Cane Thompson made the Second Team Defense.

Quarterback Preston May and wide receiver Cameron Slone were both named Honorable Mention All-State.

Elia was voted to the First Team for the second straight year. He only played five full games due to injuries. A severe knee injury cut his senior season short. (He will also miss basketball season.)

In his shortened season, Elia rushed 102 times for 936 yards with 14 touchdowns on the offensive side and also had 10 catches for 97 yards and a TD. On the defensive side of the ball, he had 25 tackles.

Cane Thompson

Thompson finished with a team-leading 81 tackles despite missing some games due to injury. It was the second straight year Thompson was named Second Team All-State.

Despite missing two full games, May put up huge numbers this season for Tug Valley as he completed 147 of 242 passes for 2,176 yards with 23 touchdowns and 12 interceptions. May also rushed 50 times for 395 yards and four TDs during the fall.

Preston May

Slone, a wide receiver, had a big year with 65 catches for 1,107 yards and 11 touchdowns.

Cameron Slone

The Panthers finished their injury-riddled season at 6-5 with a first-round loss at Tucker County in the Class A state playoffs.
