Thanksgiving offers a moment for communities to pause, reflect and take stock of the blessings that shape our lives. For us at the Mountain Citizen, this week carries special meaning. It marks 35 years since this newspaper came under its current ownership and management. Three and a half decades of service, struggle, growth and commitment to the people of Martin County.
The heart of a community newspaper is the families who clip out stories for scrapbooks, the neighbors who stop by with a tip, the young athletes who see their names in print for the first time, and the citizens who look to these pages to understand what is happening in their government, their schools and their hometowns. For 35 years, you have allowed us to be part of your daily life. For that, we are deeply grateful.
We are also thankful for the privilege to do the work that matters most in a democracy. A free press exists to serve the people by telling the truth, asking difficult questions, and ensuring our community always has access to the information it deserves. That work is not always easy, and it is rarely comfortable, but it is always necessary. Through challenges and triumphs, our purpose remains the same: to inform the public, support our community, and shine a light wherever light is necessary.
This newspaper has weathered economic shifts, industry upheaval and the challenges that come with reporting in a small community. Yet it has endured because the people of Martin County have stood with us. You have supported local journalism by reading, subscribing, advertising and sharing your stories with us. Your trust is the foundation upon which every edition rests.
As we look back on these 35 years, we realize that gratitude is also about sharing. We share a home, a history and a future. We share the responsibility of keeping our county strong, informed and connected. And we share the belief that our community is worth fighting for, reporting on and celebrating.
This Thanksgiving, we give thanks for our readers, for our dedicated staff, for every source who has spoken honestly, for every community member who has reached out with news, for every athlete, teacher, public servant and volunteer who has shaped the stories of this county. We give thanks for the opportunity to serve.
As the holiday season begins, may your homes be filled with peace, your tables with abundance and your hearts with gratitude.
From all of us at the Mountain Citizen, thank you for 35 years of trust and partnership. We look forward to the years ahead and to continuing the work of telling Martin County’s stories.
