INEZ — A Tomahawk man went to jail Thursday after he confronted his estranged wife in the roadway and fired two shots as she attempted to drive away, police said.
Jonathan Edward Sherman, 37, was taken into custody at Frank Horn Baseball Field in Inez on a charge of first-degree wanton endangerment involving the discharge of a firearm.
Martin County Sheriff John Kirk reports that Sherman’s wife had previously secured an emergency protective order and was returning home when she passed him on the road.
Sherman allegedly turned his vehicle around, drove ahead of her, stopped and stepped into the roadway, forcing her to brake. He then tried to pull her door open and struck the car multiple times with his hand, Kirk said.
As the female accelerated to escape, Sherman reportedly fired two rounds.
The sheriff recovered two spent shell casings and an unfired round in the roadway.
Sherman said he fired into the pavement and claimed he did not intend to harm his wife or her two passengers, Sheriff Kirk said.
