INEZ — Magistrate Cody Slone brought members of the Martin County High School football team to the October fiscal court meeting for recognition of their participation in a PRIDE community cleanup.

“We had 32 kids join in with us,” Slone said. “We picked up garbage alongside the road for 22 miles – 11 miles on both sides of the road from the mouth of Turkey Creek to the mouth of Buffalo Horn. I think we picked up 65 or 70 bags.”

Judge/Executive Lon Lafferty thanked Slone for organizing the cleanup and providing leadership.

“Twenty-two miles of roadway is a lot of work,” he said.

“We thank our kids,” Slone added. “They pretty much did all the work. We just dropped them off. We want to thank [Sheriff John Kirk]. He provided a deputy. [Constable Pickle Mills] was also patrolling the road for us. And the newspaper advertised it so people were aware that we were out there.”

Slone said the crew completed the job in just two and a half hours.

The court rewarded the team with a $500 check.
