CITIZEN STAFF REPORT

INEZ — Martin County Sheriff John Kirk issued a public warning Friday about an insurance scam in the county.

According to the sheriff, a man has been visiting homes under false pretenses and attempting to obtain personal information related to life insurance policies.

The man appears to know the residents’ names and gains entry by acting familiar. As he prepares to leave, he allegedly urges the homeowner to call a phone number to “make changes” to their life insurance policy.

Sheriff Kirk urged caution.

“Do not allow anyone you do not know into your home,” Kirk said. “Do not give any personal information or policy numbers to a stranger. Call the Martin County Sheriff’s Office and your insurance provider directly.”

Authorities have not released further details about the suspect.

Anyone who encounters such an individual or receives similar requests should contact the Martin County Sheriff’s Office at 606-298-2828.
