Letter to Editor: Dredging streams might prevent future problems

Editor:

Twenty years ago I worked as a newspaper reporter in Logan, West Virginia, which suffered from a seasonal flooding problem. After much discussion a dredging project was approved.

Because of this project the county went for about seven years before that area flooded again, where it used to flood annually.

We recently had a bad flood in Martin County, Kentucky, Mingo County, West Virginia, and Logan County, West Virginia. It was the worst flood we had since the 1977 Flood.

The amount of devastation was tremendous. FEMA was a great help to us, as was the Army National Guard.

Last week a friend of mine asked me what I knew about dredging projects. I told him about the one in Logan and how it kept us flood-free for years where we used to get hit annually.

He asked me if I would contact the appropriate people in the current administration about it. I told him I could write a letter and send out some emails.

FEMA knows how much money was spent on the recovery effort from the 2025 Flood. I have no idea. I just know it had to be a lot because most of the people in my community who got hit were adequately compensated (Thank God).

We feel that if the streams in Martin County, Kentucky, could be dredged (which has not been done in years), it might prevent future problems and that by dredging now, it could save the government, the taxpayers and the citizens a lot more later.

Thank you for your time.
