Lady Cards have solid week

WARFIELD — The Martin County Middle School girls basketball teams turned in a strong week of play highlighted by two convincing B-team victories and a bounce-back A-team win.

On Sept. 2, the Cardinals’ A-team came up just short in a 27-25 loss at Lawrence County.

Paige Stafford paced Martin County with 11 points, while Harleigh Maynard added four. Kennedy Mills, Makenna Marcum and Alivia Stacy each scored three. Zoe Sammons chipped in one.

The B-team dominated Lawrence County 46-16 behind a balanced scoring effort.

Stafford poured in 18 points to lead the pack. Martha Maynard hit double digits with 10 points.

Kenleigh Estep added seven points, Braylee Horn five, Harper Runyon four and Sarah McCoy two.

Two days later, Martin County hit the road again and defeated Mullins.

The A-team cruised to a 45-18 win as Marcum led the way with 18 points including three shots from beyond the arc.

Stafford followed with 11 points. Stacy added seven points. Mills scored three, and Runyon and KB Muncy chipped in two apiece.

The B-team rolled past Mullins 51-5.

Stafford and Horn provided the punch, scoring 17 and 14 points respectively. Estep added 10, Runyon six and McCoy and Maynard each had two.

The squad is scheduled for a rematch with Mullins tomorrow for the eighth-grade night at Martin County Middle School at 5:30 p.m.
