INEZ — Martin County High School girls soccer picked up a pair of wins last week defeating Boyd County 2-1 on Aug. 21 in Ashland and blanking Lawrence County 8-0 two nights before.

Faith Caldwell scored on a 40-yard free kick that sailed perfectly over the goalie’s hands into the top of the net against Boyd County.

“Surprised you couldn’t hear them cheering back in Martin County,” Coach Steven Gauze said.

Caldwell later delivered another free kick that found Annaleigh Davis who settled the ball in stride. She finished with one goal and one assist while Davis scored once.

“The Boyd County game was a big win for us,” Martin County coach Steven Gauze said. “I knew going in they returned one of the top scorers in the state and they defend very well. So I knew we would be tested on offense and defense which we haven’t faced yet this season.”

In what Coach Gauze expected to be a low-scoring game, he was unsure how the team would respond to defensive pressure.

“But the girls played very well moving the ball fast and getting shots,” he said.

The Cardinals carried that momentum into an 8-0 rout of Lawrence County.

Caldwell tallied four goals and four assists. Maddy Goble scored two goals with one assist, Davis added a goal, Jaz Jude had one goal and two assists, and Maja Alm-Arnesen recorded one assist.

“I feel we have done well so far due to such a talented eighth grade group moving up,” Gauze said. “Our current junior group was the same and they have had two record seasons already. Now both groups are together and they know how to play. Great part is they all will be back next year too.”
