PAINTSVILLE — A Johnson County grand jury has indicted a former Paintsville police officer on felony and misdemeanor charges after an investigation by the Attorney General’s Special Prosecutions Unit. Attorney General Russell Coleman announced the indictments Thursday.

The former officer, James Bradley, 37, of Paintsville, faces two counts of third-degree assault, five counts of wanton endangerment, all Class D felonies, and misdemeanor charges of driving under the influence and reckless behavior.

According to court documents, Bradley was operating an ATV under the influence in May when he assaulted two police officers and several others. At the time, he was an officer with the Paintsville Police Department.

The police department conducted the investigation and prosecutors with the Attorney General’s office presented the case to the grand jury.

The Attorney General’s office said Kentucky Supreme Court rules limit what information it can release.

An indictment is only a formal charge. Bradley is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.
