Reflecting the light

A well-known Bible teacher has just finished speaking to a large class of businesspeople on the Christians’ responsibility to be light in the world. He had emphasized that as believers we all have the obligation to reflect the Light in the world, the Lord Jesus.

After the class, one of the members shared with him an experience he had in his home that impressed upon him the same truth. He said that in the darkest corner of his basement he had made a surprising discovery. Some potatoes in that darkest corner had sprouted and were growing. At first he could not figure out how they had gotten enough light to sprout and grow. Then he noticed that hanging from the ceiling near the basement window was a shiny copper kettle that was brightly polished. It was in the perfect position to reflect the sun’s rays onto the potatoes in that darkest corner of the room.

The person relating the story said, “When I saw that, I thought, I may not be a preacher or a teacher with the ability to expound Scripture, but a least I can be a copper kettle catching the rays of the SON and reflect His light to someone.

As we think about reflecting His light, imagine walking into a cave and seeing all of the pit holes and drop-offs and seeing the danger and possibilities of death. Then imagine that someone turns off all the lights and the fear that now grips your heart because you know the danger you are in and you can’t see to avoid it.

Now imagine never having light to see the danger to begin with and imagine the fate of the one who is in the darkness of sin. It is you and I that bear the responsibility of telling the world of the danger that awaits them. People without Christ are in serious danger. They cannot see. They are stumbling around thinking they see but in truth they are in darkness. They could step off into a pit in the blackness and be lost and gone forever!

Those of us who know the light of the world need to light the way today in someone’s life. But instead of lighting the way are you sitting idle as others are in darkness heading toward a fate they might avoid. Or are you a forerunner for Christ crying and announcing him, saying, “Follow me to the light, for the only light of the world is Jesus?”

Reflect His light. All light is reflected from the source. The sun does not lose its power. Our source of light is Jesus Christ. We reflect His light to the world. We have power because we reflect the light of God found in Jesus Christ. As we lift Him up He lifts us up. As His light shines upon us we reflect it to others. Reflected light does not lose its power.
