INEZ — Martin County is among 64 Kentucky counties approved for federal Public Assistance following devastating weather in in April.
Gov. Andy Beshear announced July 23 that President Donald Trump approved Public Assistance for the 64 counties affected by the April 2 severe weather and 36 counties affected by the May 16–17 tornado outbreak.
Public Assistance helps communities cover the costs of emergency response, debris removal and repair or replacement of damaged public infrastructure.
Beshear said the president personally called him to deliver the news.
“I thanked him and shared how impressed I have been with FEMA’s work here in Kentucky,” the Governor said.
The news was good for the water and sanitation districts in Martin County. Tim Thoma, chairman of both districts, said the April and February floods combined did nearly $3 million in damages to the districts. Thus far, the districts have spent over $100,000 for repairs and equipment rentals.
“I am glad the president finally approved the disaster request,” Thoma said. “The district’s damages for the April 4 event was less than our insurance deductible and therefore not covered by insurance. FEMA assistance will absolutely help put back the monies we have already spent making the infrastructure repairs.”
