WILLIAMSON, W.Va. — There’s a new trial date in the case of a Mingo County man charged in the June 2023 shooting death of West Virginia State Police Sgt. Cory Maynard.

Timothy Kennedy, 31, was scheduled to appear in Mingo County Circuit Court on Tuesday for a motions hearing ahead of his Aug. 14 trial but the court granted a continuance.

The pretrial hearings are now set for Sept. 2 and Nov. 12 with jury selection set to start Dec. 1. The trial is on the docket to begin a week later on Dec. 8.

Kennedy was indicted by a Mingo County grand jury after Maynard was shot and killed two years ago.

Maynard and other law enforcement went to the Beech Creek area of Mingo County to investigate a shooting. As they approached the house, Maynard was fatally shot in an ambush.

Kennedy was arrested after an intense manhunt and charged with Maynard’s murder and the wounding of another person which prompted the original call.

The grand jury handed up a multi-count indictment against Kennedy in January. He is formally charged with first-degree murder, first-degree robbery, disarming a law enforcement officer, and two counts of attempted murder which stemmed from the original call for police to the area.

Kennedy remains lodged in the Western Regional Jail without bail.
