INEZ — Martin County took the time out of their offseason training to recognize two of their state champion matmen Thursday: Spencer Workman and Parker Maynard.

Workman won the heavyweight state championship this past wrestling season. Coming into the season he had big goals to finish. He was dedicated to the task that he set in place for himself. Under the guidance of head coach Andrew Chaffin and assistant coach BJ Slone, Workman reached the pinnacle of his middle school season by taking the heavyweight title.

Reflecting on Workman’s work ethic, Slone said the young wrestler brought a rare combination of attitude and athleticism to the mat.

“Spencer is special,” Slone said. “From his attitude to his physical ability he is hard to beat and he proved it this year.”

Maynard was recognized for winning the 2024 state title. He is a two-time middle school state champion, winning the titles back to back.

Maynard’s dedication to this sport has never wavered. He will travel the country to find the competition he needs in order to perfect his skills. He will be traveling to North Dakota to compete among the best in the country.

Coach Chaffin praised Maynard’s intensity and ambition.

“[Maynard] has a drive only seen in a few athletes,” Chaffin said. “I am really excited to see his future.”

Congratulations, you two. You deserve everything you go after.
