LOVELY — A Martin County man went to jail Sunday night after allegedly threatening to kill his parents and launching into a violent, knife-wielding standoff with law enforcement.
Deputies responded to a residence on Little Peter Cave Road in Lovely just before 8:30 p.m. At the scene, officers found Christopher Lee Maynard, 42, of Lovely, reportedly intoxicated and armed with a knife.
According to Deputy Steven Putman of the Martin County Sheriff’s Office, Maynard’s parents were outside the home and “scared for their lives.” They told deputies that Maynard had threatened to kill them.
As officers approached the doorway, Maynard brandished a knife and warned that deputies “would die or have a fight on our hands,” the police report states.
When deputies entered the home, Maynard began fighting with Constable Bradford Preece, who deployed a Taser in an attempt to subdue him. Despite the initial shock, Maynard continued to resist, prompting Preece to tase him a second time.
After police restrained him, EMS checked Maynard at the scene. During the encounter, he allegedly continued making threats, telling deputies, “If I was not in these handcuffs, I would kill you.”
During transport to the Martin County Sheriff’s Office, Maynard reportedly punched the divider glass repeatedly and tried to break out the cruiser windows.
Maynard faces multiple charges, including first-degree terroristic threatening, first-degree criminal mischief, public intoxication (controlled substance), first-degree wanton endangerment and first-degree disorderly conduct.
