INEZ — A heated neighborhood dispute fueled by alcohol landed an Inez man in jail July 1. Authorities say the man threatened to kill a neighbor and his dogs, claiming the animals had killed his chickens.

Martin County Sheriff’s deputies responded to Peter Cave Road in Inez after a report of the verbal altercation between neighbors.

Upon arrival, Deputy Steven Putman encountered Jeffery Maynard, 46, of Inez, who allegedly stated, “If I don’t go to jail tonight, me or him will die tonight when you leave us… I’m walking down the road when you leave, and when his dogs that killed my chickens come to the top of the road to bite me, I will shoot and kill them. And when [Noah Bowen] comes out, me or him will die.”

According to the police report, Maynard admitted he was intoxicated and said he was angrier than usual because of it.

“I swear to drunk I’m not God—I am not drunk,” Maynard allegedly told the deputy.

Law enforcement arrested Maynard on charges of alcohol intoxication in a public place and terroristic threatening.
