RAWL, W.Va. — A mother and her young son died in a single-vehicle crash that occurred overnight Tuesday along State Route 49 in the community of Rawl in Mingo County, authorities said.

The victims were identified as 24-year-old Keyonna Norman of Williamson and her 9-year-old son Kingston.

According to the Mingo County Sheriff’s Department, Norman was ejected from the vehicle after it veered off the road and rolled down a steep embankment. Her son was found inside the car.

Neither occupant was wearing a seatbelt, said Chief Field Deputy Allen Mounts.

Officials said the crash occurred between 8 p.m. Tuesday and 9 a.m. Wednesday.

The car was traveling north and had crossed the southbound lane before plunging approximately 75 feet down a hillside and coming to rest on railroad tracks below.

A Norfolk Southern Railroad detective discovered the wreckage early Wednesday and notified authorities.

Both Norman and her son were pronounced dead at the scene.

Officials said it remained unclear whether rain or road conditions contributed to the crash.

The investigation is ongoing.
