
Lafe Murphy
1930—2025
With great sadness, the family of Lafe Murphy, 95, beloved father, announce his passing and reunion with his wife Margie on June 12, 2025.
Born June 7, 1930, on Long Branch in Lovely, Lafe was the son of the late Lonnie Murphy and Cordie Bailey Murphy.
In addition to his wife and parents, he is preceded in death by sisters Dorothy M. Murphy, Laura Rachel Stepp, Rhoda Preece, Emma Evans and Gladiola Evans and brothers William Henry Murphy, Troy Murphy, Albert Murphy, Robert Murphy, Martin Murphy and Steven Murphy.
Lafe was a retired coal miner. Even though he couldn’t walk, he enjoyed gardening and working around his home by riding his ATV.
As a young adult, Lafe was a deputy sheriff, constable and magistrate. He always had a story to tell or a joke to lighten your mood. He loved his children and grandchildren and loved riding his great-grandchildren around in his wheelchair.
A longtime and faithful Christian, he attended church at the Big Elk United Baptist when he was able.
Lafe is survived by six daughters: Carol Sue (Mike) Williams of Jennies Creek; Diane (Howard) Poland of Fort Mill, South Carolina; Debbie Warden of Ajax, West Virginia; Annette (Ron) Picklesimer of Georgetown, Ohio; Tammy (Darrell) Stepp of Staffordsville; and Rhonda Workman (Doug Maynard) of Huntington, West Virginia; and two sons: Lafe Allen Murphy of Lovely, Kentucky; and Greg (Rhonda) Murphy of Aiken, South Carolina.
He is also survived by his grandchildren, Jason and Joshua Crum, Tracy and Tyler Buskirk, Casey Micha, Allison Jude, Vicky Anderson, Stephanie Warden, Monica Fielder, Chasity Scott, Patrick, Mark, Matthew, Samatha and Alexandra Murphy, and Kelsey, Amanda and Kristen Workman; his step-grandchildren Michael Williams Jr. and Angie Fry, Lindsey and Brandon Itnyre and Michael Picklesimer; and many great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
Funeral services took place Sunday, June 15, 2025 at Crum Funeral Home in Inez with Brent Haney officiating. A private burial service followed at the Murphy Family Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Crum Funeral Home of Inez.
