MARTIN COUNTY — Highway crews will begin repainting faded pavement markings this week as part of a district-wide safety initiative, the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) District 12 announced Friday.
The striping work will refresh worn road lines caused by weather and heavy traffic in all seven counties in District 12.
Crews will begin work in Johnson County and then proceed to Lawrence and Martin counties. They will continue to move through Floyd, Pike and Knott and finish in Letcher.
The mobile paint caravan will be active during daylight hours, weather permitting. According to KYTC District 12, it will continue working in the various counties over the next several months.
While most of the repainting will occur on rural secondary highways, officials said some higher-volume and four-lane routes may also see activity.
The operation will not require lane closures or flaggers, as the paint crews will be continuously moving along the roadways.
That caravan will consist of a lead vehicle equipped with a sweeper, a striping truck, and support vehicles that warn motorists of the mobile work zone and possible wet paint ahead.
The KYTC urges motorists to use caution when approaching or passing these slow-moving caravans.
Although traffic paint dries quickly, officials said motorists should avoid driving over freshly painted lines. Drying time depends on humidity and wind conditions but typically takes about four minutes.
