CITIZEN STAFF REPORT
Anglers across Kentucky will find more than warm weather and clear waters during the first weekend in June—they will get the chance to fish for free. On Saturday and Sunday, June 7–8, residents and out-of-state visitors can cast a line in Kentucky’s public waters without buying a fishing license or permit.
The Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources opens this opportunity to everyone, regardless of where they live, and applies it to all public bodies of water.
While the state waives license and permit fees, it continues to enforce all other fishing regulations. Anglers must still follow daily creel limits, size restrictions, and any rules specific to certain waterways. They must also seek permission before accessing private property.
Communities across the state will host special events to celebrate Free Fishing Weekend, many of them aimed at young anglers and families. These programs help introduce newcomers to the sport and promote outdoor recreation.
Year after year, Kentuckians mark their calendars for this popular weekend. Whether you fish regularly or plan to try it for the first time, June 7–8 offers a perfect excuse to head outdoors and enjoy one of Kentucky’s favorite pastimes—completely free.
