PRESTONSBURG — Jenny Wiley State Resort Park will undergo a major upgrade as the state directs $5.5 million toward renovating its lodge and another $1.45 million toward building a new public archery center.

The Kentucky Tourism, Arts and Heritage Cabinet announced Friday that construction will begin this fall.

Crews will build an archery center designed to host local and regional tournaments.

As part of the project, officials will close the May Lodge—home to the dining room, meeting spaces and guest rooms—on Sept. 1, 2025. They expect to complete renovations by summer 2026.

During construction, staff will relocate dining operations to the park’s conference center.

The campground and cottages currently remain closed to the public as the park continues to shelter residents displaced by recent flooding.

Gov. Andy Beshear said the park’s long-standing role as a refuge during natural disasters illustrates the importance of investing in its future.

“Time and time again, Jenny Wiley has been there for our neighbors during tough times, sheltering those impacted by floods out east,” Beshear said in a statement. “These upgrades enhance visitor experiences and ensure our parks continue being safe havens to Kentuckians when they need them most.”

While lodging will temporarily close, the park will remain open for day-use activities, including hiking, biking, fishing, picnicking and seasonal events.

State parks officials said they believe the improvements will strengthen Eastern Kentucky’s appeal as a tourism destination.

“These improvements at Jenny Wiley State Resort Park will create more reasons for travelers to visit the eastern region and experience all the wonderful amenities and outdoor recreation Jenny Wiley has to offer,” Kentucky State Parks Commissioner Russ Meyer said. “We’re excited to see how these enhancements will improve the state park experience for locals and visitors alike.”

Gov. Beshear signed legislation in 2023 that allocated $7 million for Jenny Wiley, which the General Assembly approved.

“Investing in our state parks like Jenny Wiley helps attract travelers to our New Kentucky Home while supporting our local communities,” said Beshear.
