Facing Hunger releases senior food box dates

Facing Hunger Foodbank (FHFB) has released its May schedule for the Senior Food Box program for residents aged 60+. In Martin County, the program will be available at the following locations:

  • May 21 from 11 a.m. to noon at the Rufus Reed Library in Lovely
  • May 23 from 10:30 a.m. to noon at the Collier Center in Inez
  • May 23 from 1 to 2 p.m. at the Pigeon Roost Community Center in Pilgrim

Additional regional distribution dates include:

  • May 19 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Lawrence Community Center parking lot in Louisa
  • May 28 from 11 a.m. to noon at the Williamson Memorial Fieldhouse parking lot

The Senior Food Box program (Commodity Supplemental Food Program), is a federal initiative administered by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. It provides monthly food packages to help supplement the nutritional needs of low-income seniors who meet specific income guidelines.

Each month, eligible seniors receive a 34-pound box of shelf-stable food items along with a block of American cheese.

Facing Hunger Foodbank distributes boxes through more than 115 partner agencies in Boone, Cabell, Jackson, Kanawha, Lincoln, Logan, Mason, McDowell, Mingo, Putnam, Wayne and Wyoming in West Virginia, and Boyd, Greenup, Lawrence and Martin in Kentucky. In total, FHFB serves approximately 6,500 seniors each month.
