INEZ — Martin County residents and their neighbors can prepare a Last Will & Testament at no cost by attending a free will-writing clinic April 30 at the Martin County Cooperative Extension Office.
The Livelihoods Knowledge Exchange Network (LiKEN) will host the event, offering participants the opportunity to sit down with an attorney and draft a simple Last Will & Testament. The clinic will run from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. at 9 Holy Street in Inez, welcoming both appointments and walk-ins.
At the clinic, attorneys will draft simple wills that direct how individuals’ real property — such as land and attached structures — should be distributed upon their death and outline their wishes regarding minor children. The wills created at the event will not cover personal property, such as jewelry, heirlooms or vehicles.
LiKEN stresses the importance of creating a will for Kentucky property owners. Without a will, a person’s property falls under Kentucky’s laws of intestate succession, often resulting in multiple heirs sharing ownership. This form of shared ownership, known as heirs’ property, can make land titles unclear.
By drafting a will that clearly specifies the distribution of land, property owners can help prevent complications associated with heirs’ property.
Participants need only to bring a form of identification, such as a driver’s license or state ID.
Before the clinic, LiKEN will present a seminar on estate planning and property in heirship at the Roy F. Collier Community Center, 387 East Main Street, from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m.
