AUXIER — Kentucky State Police are searching for a Floyd County man wanted in connection with a deadly shooting Friday afternoon near the Auxier bridge.
Police said Saturday afternoon the search continues for 67-year-old Larry Johnson of Prestonsburg, who is accused of fatally shooting 48-year-old Steven Adkins, also of Prestonsburg.
Investigators have obtained an arrest warrant for murder on Johnson.
Troopers responded to a report of a shooting at around 2:57 p.m. Friday. When officers arrived, they found Adkins suffering from a gunshot wound. He was rushed to Highland Regional Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.
Investigators said Johnson fled the scene in a vehicle, which he later abandoned before escaping on foot into a densely wooded area near Jane Brown Branch.
Johnson was last seen wearing a blue flannel shirt and blue jeans.
The Kentucky State Police urged anyone with information about Johnson’s whereabouts to call (606) 433-7711. All callers can remain anonymous.
Detective Logan Hillerman is leading the investigation. The Floyd County Sheriff’s Department, the Prestonsburg Police Department, and Lifeguard Ambulance Service assisted at the scene.
This is a developing story.
