Martin County school board applauds student success in academics, music and leadership

INEZ — The Martin County Board of Education recognized another impressive lineup of student accomplishments April 14, highlighting success across academics, music, science and leadership.

Schools Superintendent Larry James presented certificates to the students.

First up, Eden Elementary’s Olivia Maynard, who took top honors at the East Kentucky Regional Science Fair in the middle school division. Her project Sky High Electrified earned first place in Engineering and Mathematics, the SEF Best of Fair award, and the prestigious Amazon Innovation Award.

Moving to the arts, the superintendent recognized three Martin County High School for their selection to All-District Band. Caroline Russell, Aaron Horn and Madison Dickey all made the cut.

Nine MCHS vocalists also received recognition for their selection to All-District Choir. Those students are Abagail Stacy, Caroline Russell, Ella Parsley, Carlee Massey, Erica Alley, Lindsey Moore, Kathryn Ward, Kyle Cornette and Braxton Ramey.

Getting down to business, the BOE praised the Martin County Middle School JAG program for strong regional and state performances. Students recognized include Analeigh Davis, Cavin Mann, Annabelle Gess, Lexi Cline, Olivia Stacy, Landon Hager, Bryden Marshall and Audrey Vanover.

MCMS JAG specialist Vernon Robinson attended the meeting and commended the group for its results.

“I can’t tell you how proud I am of our kids,” Robinson said. “They did a tremendous job.”

Competing in a challenging regional field, MCMS entered five of 11 competitions. The Cardinals placed in the top three of all five, securing a trip to the state.

Analeigh Davis, Lexi Cline, Annabelle Gess and Cavin Mann placed fifth statewide in Creative Decision Making.

Landon Hager earned third place in the state in financial literacy. His competition involved completing a 50-question test in under an hour.

Bryden Marshall took third in the region in the Essay category.

Olivia Stacy won the regional title in Prepared Speaking.

Audrey Vanover is a repeat state champion in Career Preparation. She heads to the national stage in Indianapolis this week after finishing third in the nation last year.

Vanover presented her project, “Future Veterinarian,” for the BOE. The project earned her 298 out of 300 points in the regional competition.
