Document April storm damage, KY EM says

CITIZEN STAFF REPORT

Kentucky Emergency Management advises homeowners and renters who suffered damage or losses caused by the severe storms, high winds, tornadoes, and flooding that occurred April 2-7 to document damages before cleaning up in order to be eligible for FEMA disaster assistance if it becomes available.

On April 11, the Gov. Andy Beshear requested a Major Disaster Declaration from President Donald Trump for the April 2-7 event. According to a press release from the governor’s office, the state is waiting to hear if it has been approved.

In the request, Beshear asked for individual assistance for 13 counties and public assistance and direct federal assistance for 33 counties.

Martin County is not included on either of those lists.

However, a press release from the governor’s office stated, “These are just the initial counties to make the best case for assistance – and more counties may be added.”

Documenting flood damage for FEMA help:

  • Call your insurance company as soon as you can.
  • Take photos and videos of all damage before you clean up.
  • Show the outside and inside of your home or building.
  • Take close-up pictures of damaged items (like furniture or appliances).
  • If items are too damaged to keep, take a photo before you throw them out.
  • Save all receipts for repair supplies or cleanup services.
  • Make a list of everything that was damaged or lost.
  • Don’t wait for help to start cleaning up—but do document first.
  • Keep damaged items if you can, until your insurance says it’s okay to toss them.
