God is good all of the time and all of the time God is good. Some of us were taught that refrain as children in Sunday school or Bible school. Do we really believe it? With all of the trouble in the world today, all the sickness and disease, wars, economic hardships and disasters every day, how can we say that God is good all of the time?
There is no human who will not face the big three: Despair, darkness and death. It is because we live in a cursed, fallen world due to sin we have these three things. There is no escaping despair, darkness and death. So all is hopeless right? God cannot be a good God, correct? Not so.
Sin gives us despair but God gives us love. God is love and we are His creation. He naturally loves us. He cannot help but love you personally. This world is full of hate for God and for one another. It appears to many that God hates us. Many say, “Why doesn’t God get rid of evil in the world?” I’ll tell you why: It’s because of His love! For if God were to get rid of evil He would have to get rid of us, for we are evil! The fact is that God does not destroy you and me because of His love! God made a way for us to be saved from the despair, the hopelessness of sin. Love dispels all despair. “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son…”
God’s love gave us hope. God’s love sent Jesus to pay for our sins so that we might be saved from the penalty of sin. How can you despair when you know that God loves you? Isn’t it good of God to love us so?
Sin gives us darkness but God gives us light. Light always overcomes the darkness. God gave us the light of the word Jesus Christ our Lord. Jesus is light to the darkness of sin. Jesus is the Lamb of God that taketh away the sin of the world. When we trust in Christ darkness is gone and light has entered in. When you are in darkness you don’t know where you are going. You are blind. That’s why Jesus said that He “is the way…” We see clearly where we are going when we follow Jesus. It is true that the only light of the world is Jesus. The Bible says in Him there is “no darkness at all.” Isn’t God good to give us the light of Jesus Christ to show us the way?
Sin gives us death but God gives us life. God gave you life when you were born. He gave us a family. God gave us a place to live. God gave us life for His purposes and for His glory. Since God gave you life then you must know without a doubt that you are important to Him. But if this life is all that we have then as Paul says, we are of all men most miserable. No. God not only gave us this life on earth but He offers us eternal life with Him. He offers us a new birth, escape from the despair, darkness and death of this sin-cursed world. He offers us His love, His light and His life. All of these are ours if we will trust in Jesus Christ. Isn’t it good of God to give us life everlasting?
I love Psalm 27, especially verses 13-14. “I had fainted, unless I had believed to see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living. Wait on the Lord: be of good courage, and he shall strengthen thine heart: wait, I say, on the Lord.”
Yes, this world is full of despair, darkness and death but we have the goodness of God in that He gives us love, light and life. Truly we can all say, “Our God is good all the time all the time God is good!”
