Virginia Irene Spence
1935—2025

Virginia Irene Spence, aged 90, passed into her Heavenly reward Friday, March 28, 2025.

The second of nine children, Irene was born March 6, 1935, in Martin County to the late Granville and Opal Fraley Setser.

In 1953, she married Howard Spence, who preceded her in death.

She spent many years working as a cook and cafeteria supervisor at Inez Middle School. Together she and Howard had five children, 12 grandchildren and 30 great-grandchildren.

She is preceded in death by her oldest son, Harold Spence; grandchildren Sabrina Sites and Wesley Spence; great-grandson Brandon Kyle Crum; brothers William, David and Blaine Setser; sisters Vista Burke, Ruth Sunday and Doris McKinney; and infant Peggy Setser.

Remaining to mourn her are her children Sharon Sites (Dock), Darrell Spence (Gladys), Tammy Sites (Lloyd), and Randy Spence (Rhonda); daughter-in-law Patricia Spence; grandchildren Brenda Charlene Bowen (Jerry), Stephanie Crum (Brian), Angela Dawn Vinson (Tommy), Carla Mooney (Richard), Loyce Vanhoose (Scott), Ryan Sites (Lynn), Gina Hanson (Travis), Miranda Sites, Chad Spence, Amanda Shipp (Robert), Samantha Spence, Jared Spence, Krissy Spence and Heather Spence; her youngest sister Bonnie Setser; and the remaining 29 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were conducted Monday, March 31, 2025, at 1 p.m. at Callaham Funeral Home in Inez with Brother Luther Fletcher providing comfort to those present. Interment followed at the Setser Family Cemetery in Fallsburg. Arrangements under the direction of the Callaham Funeral Home, Inez.
