Roger Lester Copley Obituary

Roger Lester Copley
1954—2025

Roger Lester Copley, 70, of Stonecoal, West Virginia, passed away peacefully March 21, 2025.

Born April 26, 1954, Roger was the son of the late Lester and Francis (Bowen) Copley. He grew up in the rolling hills of Appalachia in the town of Crum.

Roger was an extremely hard worker and a dedicated, retired member of the United Mine Workers of America. He loved unconditionally and knew the true meaning of helping people, animals and his community with compassion, empathy and understanding. Roger was skilled in many trades, including auto mechanics and carpentry. If he didn’t know how to do something, he and Jimmy would figure it out or rig it up.

Roger loved sitting on his front porch, rocking in his rocking chair, getting his legs tan, and talking to people in person or over the phone. He never met a stranger. His cheerful heart and jolly spirit made everyone feel like family. He loved to joke and cut up with everyone, but his favorite adventure was being a papaw to Maxton and Maverick.

Roger married his loving wife, Betty (Cisco) Copley, on Jan. 25, 1975, and together they built a beautiful life. They just celebrated their Golden 50th Wedding Anniversary.

Along with his loving wife, Roger is survived by his daughter, Amanda (Johnny) Copley-Cooper of Stonecoal; his son, Travis Lester Copley of Prestonsburg; his grandchildren, Maxton Blake, Rae’Lynn Grace and Maverick Lester; sisters Roselee Wallace, Carolyn (Jimmy) Spaulding, Ailene (Gary) Maynard, Janet (Bud) Booth and Bonnie (Mitch) McCoy. He was also preceded in death by one sister, Barbara (David) Waller, one brother, Vernon Copley, and a brother-in-law Dennis Terry (Rita) Cisco. Roger also leaves behind a plethora of special nephews, nieces, his best dogs – Tiny and Luna, and a host of friends and family.

Celebration of life services were conducted Thursday March 27, 2025. Entombment followed at Riverview Memorial Garden in Louisa, Kentucky. Mullins Family Funeral Home is honored to serve the family.
