Lady Cards get comeback win over Mingo

INEZ — Martin County High School softball team defeated East Ridge, split a pair with Mingo Central and lost a game to Knott Central last.

On Saturday, head coach Boo Newsome led her squad to a comeback win over Mingo after being down 6-2.

“We bounced back nice after the loss on Friday. Our bats got going and we made some great plays. Zoie pitched a great game,” Newsome stated. “We played a good second game with a great Knott County team. We took them to seven innings thanks to our batting and great catches. We just fell a little short.”

MC vs East Ridge – A timely offensive effort and strong pitching lifted Martin County to a 4-3 victory over East Ridge at home March 25.

Bella Muncy’s consistent on-base presence featuring a single and a walk sparked the offense. She crossed home once for the Cards.

Sophie Harless added two singles and a crucial run. Keilan Jewell’s powerful bat delivered two doubles and an RBI. Zoie Hinkle racked up a single on the night. Cardinal Hallee Preece was given a free base and scored a run.

Allyssa Mullins controlled the circle pitching a complete game with six strikeouts and no walks.

Marlee Grayson and Jayla Savage each scored runs via stolen bases.

MC at Mingo – Mingo Central proved too much for Martin County resulting in a 10-2 defeat Friday.

Keilan Jewell reached base on a walk. Marlee Grayson, her courtesy runner, scored after a stolen base.

Sophie Harless contributed offensively with two singles, a walk, an RBI, a stolen base and a run scored.

Martin County’s Halle Preece stole a base for Coach Newsome’s squad.

Allyssa Mullins struck out five and walked one in the pitching effort.

MC vs Mingo – Mingo had a 6-2 lead heading into the fourth inning at Martin County’s home field Saturday. The Cards rallied in the sixth inning scoring five runs to complete the 8-6 comeback victory.

Haley Robinson, Sophie Harless, Mia Fields, Bella Robinson and Alyssa Mullins all crossed home plate for an 8-6 lead heading into the seventh inning.

Zoie Hinkle struck a pitcher out and the defense cleaned up two for the Cards to complete the

comeback win.

H. Robinson led the way with two singles, a double, an RBI and two runs scored. Harless and Keilan Jewell each added doubles with Harless driving in a run.

B. Robinson delivered key hits, including a double, a single, a stolen base and an RBI.

Fields scored a run and Karlee Gillman rounded the bases for a key score.

Raegan Horn received a free trip to first. She also knocked a single out of the box and drove in a run.

Mullins crossed home to tally a run on the board, hit a single and stole a base.

Hinkle’s dominant pitching with 12 strikeouts secured the comeback victory.

MC vs Knott Central – A high-scoring affair saw Knott Central overpower Martin County 17-8 Saturday in Inez.

Bella Muncy provided offensive sparks with two singles, two walks, two runs scored and a stolen base. Haley Robinson contributed a single, a walk, an RBI and a run. Zoie Hinkle tallied two singles, a double and an RBI. Hallee Preece also added a single, a walk, two runs and an RBI.

Lady Cardinals Keilan Jewell, Bella Robinson, and Raegan Horn each racked up a single with Horn scoring and Robinson driving in a teammate.

Coach Newsome is taking her Lady Cards to Pigeon Forge to play at the Ripken Experience this week. The team will gain valuable experience practicing on the field and playing two varsity contests Thursday against Wahoma and Portland Christian, both out of Kentucky.

The Ladies will return home to host a doubleheader against Prestonsburg on April 7 at 6 p.m. They travel the following night to Betsy Layne.
