Cause for Paws 5K rescheduled for April 19

CITIZEN STAFF REPORT

WILLIAMSON — Massive flooding in the Tug Valley forced organizers to delay the 2025 Cause for Paws 5K/1 Mile Walk, which typically takes place in February.

The Tug Valley Road Runners Club presents the race each year with support from local businesses and individuals. Proceeds benefit Save Our Strays (SOS) Animal Rescue, a no-kill shelter in Mingo County. This year’s event holds even greater significance, as the Feb. 16 Tug Fork River flood destroyed the SOS facility on Borderland Road.

Organizers have rescheduled the race for 10 a.m. Saturday, April 19, at Southern West Virginia Community and Technical College in West Williamson. Race day registration starts at 8:30 a.m., and participants can pre-register now at webscorer.com/register?raceid=376673.

Race Director Leigh Ann Ray confirmed that the flood spared all of the animals at the facility. However, it completely wiped out the property and structures, leaving SOS to rebuild from the ground up.

“All of the animals were rescued,” Ray said. “But it’s going to be a lengthy process to rebuild and begin housing animals again, so SOS needs our support more than ever right now.”

The flood destroyed several structures, including brand-new kennels and the caretaker’s residence.
